LOS ANGELES -- The Golden Globe Awards red carpet got off to a wet start Sunday, and the weather wasn't to blame.

According to USA TODAY staff on the ground at the awards, the area where video journalists are stationed was flooded after 5,000 gallons of water spewed from a burst pipe.

A large light used in video production was placed too close to a heat sensor, which caused the sprinkler system to trip.

The Beverly Hills Fire Department worked with the Beverly Hills Hotel maintenance staff to remove the water. Sections of carpet are being cut up and replaced.

Irine Spivak, public relations manager at the The Beverly Hilton, released this statement: "We can confirm that there was a malfunction with a sprinkler near the red carpet. The situation was quickly resolved. ...As some of the biggest names in entertainment are scheduled to attend Golden Globe Awards tonight, we wanted to give the carpet one last wash before it opened."

The red carpet is still scheduled to open on time at 5:15 p.m. ET.
