LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A 64-year-old Lake City homeowner shot man after police say he broke into her home through the bedroom window.
Jill Stucker was home watching television when 26-year-old Milton Barber Jr., a registered sex offender and convicted felon, broke in through Stucker's bedroom window, according to a news release from Lake City Police Department Assistant Public Information Officer Craig Strickland.
Strickland said as Barber came in through the window he cut himself on the glass.
Stucker heard the sound of the breaking glass, armed herself with a handgun and tried to leave her home out the back door.
As Stucker was leaving, Strickland said Barber began to chase her out of the house. While she was running away from the man, neighbors heard her yelling, "Help! Help! Help! Help, me please," Strickland said.
When Stucker reached the street, she saw Barber still following her. Strickland said at that time she stopped and fired one shot which struck Barber in the chest.
Barber then fled over a wooden fence in the backyard. Blood was found on the fence and down the sidewalk, leaving a trail for police to follow.
Officers found Barber on the doorstep of a home on N.E. Bradley Terrace, where a man was applying pressure to the gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel treated Barber at the scene before he was transported to Shands Gainesville for surgery. Strickland said Barber is listed in critical condition and that the crime scene has been turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for investigation.
Strickland said while officers searched Stucker's home they found several checks belonging to Deas, Bullad Properties, 672 S.E. Duval Street on the sidewalk along Barber's blood trail. Those checks were previously reported stolen by Deas, Bullard Properties earlier in the evening when police responded to a burglary, Strickland said. The first burglary, in which someone busted out the glass window next to the front door, occurred just 50 minutes before the home invasion. Strickland said they are investigating if Barber is involved in the stolen checks.
Strickland said charges against Milton Lee Barber Jr. are pending. July 11, 2012 Barber was placed on probation for charges of burglary, battery and sexual assault. His probation was set to last until July 2019.
