JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 36-year-old woman will spend in life in prison for the kidnapping and murder of an elderly Gainesville man.
Shanda Merritt was sentenced Friday for the 2010 crime against 83-year-old Charles Soukup.
Merritt pleaded guilty in November to armed robbery, kidnapping and murder in the first degree, according to a release from the State Attorney's Office. Merritt also received a life sentence in November for the attempted murder of her ex-boyfriend Charles Davis. Merritt had previously pleaded guilty to that charge as well.
Soukup was kidnapped from Jacksonville International Airport and strangled and shot for his rental car. The rental car was then used in the attempted murder of Davis. A total of 6 people were arrested in the Soukup case.
"Words are not enough to describe the deep pain, the turmoil and kaleidoscope of intense feelings that our family has been put through and will be feeling for the rest of our lives," Patricia Holloway, daughter of Soukup, told the court.
