ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- The family of a man shot by a St. Johns County police officer December 11 is requesting an independent investigation.

The cause of 64-year-old Rodney Wayne Stevens' death has been determined by the District Medical Examiner to be a gunshot wound to the head. The deputy who shot Stevens is 29-year-old Thomas C. Coward, according to a St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Catherine Payne release.

Coward, who has been with the Sheriff's Office since July 2004, is currently on paid administrative leave.

Deputies say Stevens had three warrants out for his arrest: felony battery, tampering with a witness and grand theft.

Officers were called to the home in the 300 block of Katnack Road after reports of a person being armed and threatening others in the home.
