ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Lakeside's Middle School's Matthew Keene has been losing his eye sight since he was in the fourth grade.
Keene has a genetic disease that has dwindled down his vision to where he can only see shapes.
However, the now eighth grader was determined to learn how to play an instrument in the school band. Since he couldn't read the sheet music, he listens to the notes and plays the song over and over until he memorizes it.
Keene has learned how to play the trumpet and guitar. He said his next goal is to learn how to play the saxophone. Keene said he is enjoying band since learning all the notes and will try out for the high school band next year.
He also plans to take summer music classes this year to help younger students starting out in the band.
