10-year-old child in St. Augustine
Meredith Davis, 23, was stopped near The Shores in St. Augustine after dispatch received reports of a possibly impaired driver. During the stop, deputies stated in a report from the St. John's County Sheriff's Office that Davis appeared to be on some sort of narcotic. Davis gave permission for deputies to search her car and they found crack cocaine in a Tylenol bottle, four unidentified pills in a sandwich bag and used needles inside a make-up bag. A 10-year-old child was also in the car with Davis when she was pulled over.
Davis was transported to Flagler Hospital to be medically evaluated after she allegedly admitted to deputies she had injected crack cocaine three hours before hitting the road. Once cleared, Davis was booked into the St. Johns County Jail and charged with possession of cocaine and drug equipment. The 10-year-old girl is listed as the daughter of Davis' boyfriend in the report and was released to family.
Only a day later, a mother in Volusia County was accused of driving drunk with a child in the car.

Christy Bostic-Petrain, 38, was arrested about 1:45 a.m. Monday after a witness in the Walmart parking lot on State Road 44 allegedly saw her drink a beer, then speed away with an 11-year-old boy in the vehicle. "There's a lady in the car next to me who is totally intoxicated. She's sitting here drinking beer," said the 911 caller. "She's sitting there drinking a beer the entire time her kid's in the store and she's spilling it. She smoked her cigarette backwards and she didn't even know."
Deputies spotted Bostic-Petrain allegedly driving erratically and pulled her over. Bostic-Petrain failed field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test and deputies said she admitted she did something stupid.
Her son was turned over to a relative.
5-year-old child in Duval County
Early Thursday morning, 5-year-old Kelsey Johnson was killed in a crash while traveling with her mother, 28-year-old Crystal Heidrick, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Heidrick was transported to UF Health Jacksonville in serious condition. At this point in the investigation, it is believed alcohol and speed were a factor in the deadly crash, FHP said. Heidrick consented to a blood draw, but has not been charged at this time.
According to the FHP report the Heidrick was traveling in the left emergency lane on I-295 Northbound and drove into the grassy center median when the emergency lane ran out. FHP said Heidrick over corrected, crossed the northbound lanes and struck a tree.
