JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Since the First Coast is expected to experience some high winds from Hurricane Sandy off the coast, the Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville is encouraging boaters to stay safe on the water this weekend.

Winds of 27-32 knots are expected on the St. Johns River on Friday and Saturday, according to a release from the Coast Guard.

"The Florida-Georgia football game is an exciting time in Jacksonville, but we want to remind boaters to use added caution this weekend as Hurricane Sandy brings heavy winds and seas," said Cmdr. Brian Rush, chief of response at Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville. "I'm encouraging mariners to keep their boats tied to the docks this weekend and enjoy the game from land until these high winds and seas pass by."

Boaters who wish to travel through downtown Jacksonville should proceed with caution and wear life jackets, as winds are capable of overturning vessels.

Anyone who is thinking about traveling on the water, or doing recreational activities such as fishing, should monitor weather conditions on TV and online before going out. The VHF radio channel 16 is also available for boaters.
