SANFORD, Fla. -- Several photos recovered from the cell phone of Trayvon Martin show a hand holding a gun and marijuana plants, among other things.

The photos, which have not previously been released, were posted on the defense website of George Zimmerman. Zimmerman, 29, is charged with fatally shooting 17-year-old Martin February 26 of last year during a confrontation at a gated community in Sanford. Facing murder charges, he is pleading not guilty and claiming self-defense. His trial starts next month.

The photos, according to Zimmerman co-counsel Don West, are "important and significant" to the case. They may also be relevant in the legal battle between the defense and the State Attorney's Office.

Zimmerman's lawyers have previously raised concerns that the state has been slow to turn over evidence in the discovery process. Initially, defense lawyers complained that the state took months to turn over Trayvon Martin's cell phone data. More recently, they expressed "frustration" that Zimmerman's injury photos were initially released in black and white, rather than the bloodier and more dramatic color pictures.

Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara said Thursday that he plans to file a Motion for Sanctions against the state later that day. It will be his fourth such Motion for Sanctions in this case, but the only time in his 30 year career, he says, that he has "ever filed a motion for sanctions against a prosecutor."

"It's incredibly frustrating," O'Mara told First Coast News. "This is the most frustrating case I've ever had in terms of discovery."

First Coast News contacted the State Attorney's Office for comment but has not yet heard back.
