Alarm clocks are going off all over the First Coast this morning, it is back to school for Duval, St. Johns, Baker and Bradford Counties.

That means there is going to be some first day jitters for students, especially young students.  This could be their first time away from mom and dad for an extended period and that can make some children nervous.

Dr. Karina Jeifez, a child psychologist with Baptist Behavioral Health, says parents should just be calm and positive because if they are anxious, the children will pick up on that and be anxious too.

If your child is worried about meeting the other kidS, reinforce the people he or she or might already know.

"Remind the child, so and so is going to be in your classroom and how much fun that is going to be," says Dr. Jeifez.

Also, kindergartners or 1st graders might start crying when you get to the classroom, but fight the urge to hang around.  Dr. Jeifez says to just give your child a hug and tell him or her you will see them later that day and let the teacher take control.
The longer you prolong the goodbye, the harder it is.

The first day of school is always a big day and after a couple of days those jitters should go away!
