When it comes to promoting a "green car," there's no better celebrity to have in your corner than Leonardo DiCaprio. Now Fisker Automotive has him -- both as a buyer of the Karma plug-in hybrid luxury car and as an investor.

Titanic star DiCaprio made an impact nearly a decade ago when he shunned the usual trappings of the celebrity car world -- BMWs, Cadillac Escalades or other luxury barges -- in favor of a humble Toyota Prius. The Prius hybrid, from a dealership in Santa Monica, Calif., symbolized care for the planet.

Ever since, automakers have looked to his stamp of approval. As such, DiCaprio and Fisker issued a joint announcement this week saying they are going to work together to promote the cause of global sustainability.

"My foundation supports efforts to secure a sustainable future for our planet and all its inhabitants," says DiCaprio in a statement. "I am delighted to be working with Fisker Automotive to promote this shared vision."

He received the first Fisker Karma luxury electric vehicle with range extender off the production line last summer. Besides its hybrid powerplant, the Karma comes with other eco-friendly features. One version, for instance, has reclaimed wood interior trim and "animal-free interiors," meaning no leather seats or dashboard. But the Fisker also comes with a celebrity price tag, costing upwards of $100,000 for the plusher versions.

Plus, the Karma has the largest solar glass roof designed for a production vehicle, the Fisker Karma harnesses energy from the sun to extend the driving range for up to an additional 200 miles/322 km annually, according to Fisker.
