JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Undersheriff got an earful Tuesday night from homeowners and concerned parents on the heels of the abduction and murder of 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle.

Instead of usual crime prevention walk, one-on-one's with Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt detailed the do's and dont's in keeping your kids and community safe from a predator.

"From a distance I would not be able to tell you if that person talking to that kid wasn't their parent or somebody they knew," said Christine Viets, a Jacksonville homeowner.

In the case of Cherish Perrywinkle, Senteriftt said the only person to blame in this case is the suspect Donald Smith.

The Undersheriff then admitted JSO should have notified the media sooner than it did.

But that admission didn't comfort every parent JSO spoke with in the Sheffield Oaks community Tuesday evening.

"I want to see the people that went after a child, why they were released, and why the guidelines weren't stricter," said Mendy Nancarrow, a Jacksonville parent.

If you want more information on the sex offenders and predators that live in your neighborhood, you can sign up for alerts through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
