JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- The First Coast News On Your Side team received an email from Richard Vivito, who is applying for a job with the JEA. He discovered he has to pay $40 take a test and thought it was strange

He wrote "I couldn't believe they wanted me to pay to take the test. Never, on any other jobs I have applied for, have I had to pay to take a test. Why?"

The On Your Side team received the following statement from JEA spokesperson, Gerri Boyce.

"JEA requires a TABE and a WEISEN test for the craft level positions. FSCJ administers these tests. We receive the scores from FSCJ and then interview based on results.

We do this because of the sheer number of applicants for the craft positions. This one alone had more than 300 applicants. The apprentice positions have more than 2,000 applicants. Applicants must pass this test in order to proceed.

We purposely chose a community college instead of going with a private firm. FSCJ is responsible for collecting the money and it goes to them alone for the cost of administering the tests.

This test is used by other companies and the applicants can use the same test scores for two years with other employers. JEA also accepts results within the two-year window.

JEA does not reimburse should the applicant get the job."
