JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- This story comes to us from Judy Brown. She called First Coast News during the talent phone bank on Monday.
She claims there's a house next door that has been vacant for years and she wants something to be done about it. First Coast News Consumer reporter David Williams is getting answers.
If you drive down Beach Boulevard to the Intracoastal Waterway, you will find a picturesque Jacksonville neighborhood with stately homes. Ericka Schneider has called it home for a couple years.
"It's a great neighborhood," Schneider said.
What isn't so great, she said, is a house at the entrance of Silver Palm Drive.
"There's a house that's been sitting empty ever since we moved in here," Schneider explained. "It's just an eyesore."
You can see what condition the outside of the home appears to be.
"The tarp is in shatters or shreds and it's a shredded mess all over the roof," Schneider said.
There is a notice on the door dated February 11th saying the home is in violation of more than one city code.
"I would like to see somebody take it down and put something nice there," Schneider said.
Municipal Code Compliance Office spokesperson Monica Landeros-Jimenez told First Coast News the home's private owner hasn't maintained the property since 2009.
Landeros-Jimenez said the property has been cited 11 times for nuisance overgrowth and arranged abatement. The latest citation, Landeros-Jimenez said, was on March 27. There is a $250 daily "rolling" administrative fine order against the property for non-compliance.
All of the homes in the neighborhood share canals. First Coast News has also learned there's a problem with a collapsed bulkhead in the back of that house in question. It is a concern to another neighbor who said it is eroding her bulkhead.
Landeros-Jiminez said there is no scheduled demolition date. She said all MCCD can provide is that further deterioration could lead to demolition.
