SANFORD, Fla. - Day one of opening statements in the George Zimmerman murder trial are now underway.

Zimmerman has plead not guilty to second-degree murder charges for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, 17, last year.

The defense is expected to argue Zimmerman shot the teenager in self-defense, while the state will argue the neighborhood watch member intentionally took the unarmed teen's life.

The trial's opening statements also mark the first time attorneys will address the newly seated jury of six women.

Expect to hear the word 'profiled' coming from the state now that Judge Debra Nelson has allowed it to be used in opening statements.

However, Nelson ruled the state cannot use the term 'racially profiled.'

It remains unclear if Zimmerman will take the stand in his own defense.

Nelson ruled Saturday against allowing voice expert testimony about a 911 call made the night Trayvon Martin was killed.

Zimmerman's defense team called the ruling a victory days before the trial is set to begin.

"It cleans up the trial. My concern with the trial is that we were going to spend a week or two on this type of evidence, which was obviously junk science," said defense attorney Mark O'Mara.

Prosecutors were trying to prove that screams heard on 911 calls came from Martin, not Zimmerman.

The state's experts testified at an earlier hearing and said it was Martin heard screaming. The defense claimed that positive audio recognition on the 911 call recordings isn't feasible.
