By Shannon Ogden First Coast News JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Sitting behind a messy desk in a modest office in an under air conditioned building near downtown, Dewey Painter is improving lives. Painter runs Mission Harvest America and his mission is simple: help anyone anywhere. "There's just no joy like helping someone, " says Painter as he coordinates a truckload of clothes to be shipped to the poor in Haiti. Since Mission Harvest's founding in 1996 Painter figures the group has sent 2,300 semi-truck loads of goods to people in 61 countries. That is in addition to the 57,000 care packages he has put together for U.S. troops serving overseas. Painter is a retired soldier. And at 65, his "retirement" consists of working 60-to-70 hours a week without pay. It's not exactly a restful way to spend the golden years but it is exactly why Painter is one of our 12 Who Care.
