JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- You don't have to be a professional baker, you just have to agree with our growing list of Hero Bakers who believe every child deserves a birthday cake.

Our latest Hero Baker birthday party was at a Community Connections center off Emerson. The Hero Bakers brought mini cakes with bright blue and yellow and orange icing.

The kids were thrilled. And all their buddies got a treat, too...cupcakes.

Hero Bakers volunteer to bake cakes for children who are in the lowest income group in Jacksonville. Some are homeless and some are victims of domestic violence.

Donna O'Steen with Community Connections, a United Way member agency, said the children wouldn't have birthday cakes without Hero Bakers.

We would love to have you join us! We have a special call out for bakers in the Northside, but centers all over town welcome Hero Bakiers. If you volunteer, you can choose where you want to help and when.

Just go to Hero Central on firstcoastnews.com and click on Hero Central and then BE A HERO.

Hero Central is our new project with the United Way.
