JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hero Beaders are giving cancer patients a shopping trip - while they are stuck in a chair getting chemotherapy.
Hero Beaders is our newest "Hero Army" in our Hero Central project.
The idea is to make handmade bracelets for cancer patients. They also will be given to people getting dialysis and victims of domestic violence.
The idea started with Jeudy Rooks, of River City Beads on San Jose Boulevard, who had just lost her father to cancer. She had spent many hours with him in chemo units and developed a big heart for cancer patients.
Rooks emailed 800 customers, the word spread and now Hero Beaders are meeting in groups and working individually to make bracelets.
Some Hero Beaders are cancer survivors themselves.
The first Hero Beader donations went to chemo patients at St. Vincent's. The Hero Beaders also are making bracelets in gray and silver for men.
If you'd like to make a Hero Bracelet, just drop it off at River City Beads at 1615 W. University Blvd., Jacksonville, Fla. 32217.
