JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two weeks ago, Hero Central focused on the shortage of instruments at Andrew Jackson High.
The idea was simple: Why hang on to your high school trumpet if you can barely remember the notes and you haven't touched it in years?
The response for the Hero Central instrument drive was terrific. We even featured a story on our Facebook page, which inspired band alums from Andrew Jackson to rally each other around the country.
Some donated financially, rather than mailing heavy instruments.
Band director Reginal Mitchell said when he came to the school four years ago, only 30 students were in the band. Some couldn't read music. Now, 117 students are in the band.
Next year, Mitchell is expecting some 75 new freshmen, and many don't have instruments. In fact, this year some students had to sit and watch everybody else play.
If you want to help the band, just drop off your instrument at the school. The donation is tax deductible.
Mitchell said he's grateful for the donations so far. At the top of his wish list still, however, is big brass.
