JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- If you're too embarrassed to smile or your teeth hurt so much you can't chew, life seems pretty miserable.

The problem is, many folks can't afford dental care, especially now in Jacksonville because the University of Florida closed its dental clinic due to funding issues. Another state dental program also closed because of the tough economy.

So Hero Central is launching a new program called, "Hero Dentists."

We can't promise everyone automatic, free help, but if you don't have dental insurance, and your case can be handled by our Hero Dentists, then it's possible you may receive free care.

A dental assistant hooked one woman up with a Hero Dentist Dr. Anthony Corral at the Beaches and he did an upper set of implants, permanent dentures.

We have a group of dentists who've volunteered to help.  But we certainly will need more.

If you would like to be a Hero Dentist, please email Jeannie Blaylock.

Dentists can fill out a form to be granted sovereign immunity, work at their own offices and choose the cases they want, from filling cavities or pulling teeth to root canals.

Harmony Dental Lab in the Lavilla section of Jacksonville already has donated materials and time to our first two Hero dentist patients.

Partner Garrett Smith with Harmony said he's a hometown guy who is grateful his business is so successful.  All of Harmony's work is done in Jacksonville - not outsourced to other countries, he said, Smith wants to give back to the community.

If you need dental care put your name and contact information under "BE A HERO" in the First Coast News Hero Central section. You may also contact Jeannie Blaylock.

Again, we'll try to help as many people who qualify as possible.  It will, however, take time and patience.
