JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The office of a St. Johns County Deputy is filled with stuffed animals. He's been collecting them from donors for more than 20 years.
Deputy Joe Bowen works in the Crime Prevention and Community Affairs Unit. Part of his work includes going out to the community, and often he brings stuffed animals with him.
He delivers the furry toys to nursing homes and hospitals.
"I will grab their hand - man or women - I will grab their hand and squeeze it, and I will tell them we care," he said.
Bowen said everyone could use a stuffed animal, whether they're young or old. He said for some of the people he visits he's their only visitor all day.
Bowen has handed out roughly 35,000 stuffed animals.
"Even if they're having a real bad day or a real bad week, that one moment of kindness can change their whole day," he said.
