ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- Tammy McGuire is a First Coast woman whose life mission is to help every child in Northeast Florida who's in outer home care, foster care, relative care or non-relative care.
Six years ago, McGuire came up with the idea to start Foster Closet after she and her husband fostered two boys.
Foster Closet is a free resource for Northeast Florida's foster parents, relatives and non-relative placements to get the essentials they need.
McGuire said when the two boys came to her, they had nothing, so she asked for help.
Only to find out there was no help and that she needed to start something to help those kids who are fostered.
Some 21 months later she did just that. She started Foster Closet in her own personal closet at her house.
McGuire said it grew so quickly that now she's in a 2,200-square foot building in Atlantic Beach.
McGuire said since they started Foster Closet in October 2006, they've helped more than 3,400 kids.
