JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Kiersten Mercado, 16, had no idea why her mother wanted her to miss the school bus Thursday morning.

It was because we at First Coast News were on the way to her home to surprise her with a scholarship for $1,000 as part of our Hero Next Door Student Scholarship.

Kiersten is a Sophomore at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville studying Visual Arts.  She has a G.P.A. of 3.55 and is involved in numerous volunteer projects in the community.

"I did Teens for Jeans and I have donated candy for the troops and I went to a first grade classroom and helped set up their classroom with art. Oh my gosh, this is so overwhelming!" exclaimed Kiersten holding her check.

She will put the money to good use, Kiersten has big plans for her future.

"Well I am a visual artist so I am looking to go to New York and be successful there and hopefully bring back that success to Jacksonville and help the arts in Jacksonville," said Kiersten.

Kiersten's mother, Sabrina Mercado, nominated her and was tearing up watching her daughter in the spotlight.

"Kiersten, I love you so much, I am just at a loss of words. I am so proud," said Sabrina.

We at FCN are proud of you too Kiersten and can't wait to see what your future holds!
