Naomi Watts is in Los Angeles, where her partner Liev Schreiber is starting the Showtime seriesRay Donovan. She promised herself that she wouldn't wake up to watch the nominations announced live. But she did.
night, after the People's Choice Awards, "I went home early and went to
bed by 10 but I had three different wakeups from the kids and couldn't
go back to sleep. I swore to myself I wouldn't turn on the TV, because I
was pretty sure it was not going to go that way. I was lying here, I
turned it on.
"I feel like it was tough category. A couple of
other women were excluded that I thought for sure would get in. It was
anyone's guess, as far as I was concerned," she says. "I'm doing very
good but I've had no sleep."
The biggest surprise? "Me!" laughs Watts, up for playing a distraught mother in the tsunami dramaThe Impossible.
In fact, Marion Cotillard, considered a shoo-in forRust and Bone, didn't get nominated for best actress. But Watts is focusing on the positive. "It was great that Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) got in, although I wish Nicole (Kidman, for The Paperboy) had got in as well. I wish the movie had more love there," she says.
she can start focusing on what to wear to the Oscars. "The weird thing
is, it's hard to relax during this period, everyone is offering you
clothes and jewelry. Hang on a second. It's not happening yet. I'm very
superstitious. I don't like to jinx things. I'm not going to have that
conversation until it's a reality but now that it is, I need to start
thinking about it," she says.
As for today? "I'm going to get the
kids to school and do some interviews. And we have Critics' Choice
tonight. This week is ridiculous. My mum is coming in today as well.
She'll have good news when she lands," says Watts.
