Jon Stewart returns to Comedy Central's The Daily Show tonight after a summer-long absence.

He spent the last few months in Jordan directing Rosewater, an independently made Iranian political drama based on a true story, from his own adapted screenplay. Stewart's 12-week break was his longest yet from the show, which he joined in 1999 as a replacement for Craig Kilborn.

Daily Show correspondent John Oliver filled the anchor chair for eight weeks of original episodes, earning accolades for his stint. The show has aired repeats since Oliver's last episode on Aug. 15.

Stewart no doubt will talk about his summer (he chatted via Skype with Oliver on air), and the news he's missed riffing on.

This week's guests are a typically eclectic mix: Tonight's show (11 p.m. ET/PT) features Andrew Harper, head of the United Nations Refugee Agency in Jordan; Wednesday's has Mario Livio, author of Brilliant Blunders From Darwin to Einstein: Colossal Mistakes by Great Scientists That Changed Our Understanding of Life and the Universe. And Thursday he hosts actor Michael C. Hall (Dexter).
