The speculation is over! Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James announced (and Focus Features confirmed) the leads to her highly anticipated movie adaptation. Ben and Kate actress Dakota Johnson will play Anastasia Steele, while Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam will play Christian Grey.
And like with every big casting announcement (Batfleck, anyone?), lots of die-hard fans of the story are less than pleased.
Here's a sampling of how our Twitter followers replied to our tweet about the casting news:
@AnnChambers521: Straight to video.
@PamCawood: Not a good pick for the two at all
@loopylooplealea: I wont be watching it now, that's for sure!
@QueenAlanis72: I'm disappointed. I was picturing Christian Grey with black hair and blue eyes and Ana Steele as a gorgeous red head.
@WVstraw_dog: HORRIBLE CASTING choices. They are unattractive and just...just bad.
@bellabann: So very disappointed with both choices. No longer looking forward to seeing the movie :-( :'(
@cheezygirl21: why won't they listen to the fans! Well your loss....
@Azertynin: wrong cast (mostly for Christian), very disappointed.
Who did they have in mind?
@GiL50SoG: Matthew Bomer and Alexis Bledel would be the perfect couple
@Simmayyildiz: i always imagined Matt as Christian, now i can't even imagine the movie. It's ridiculous
@naty_rh16: that guy sucks! he is fat and ugly! Matt Bomer is Christian Grey
@Linneaaeklund: Matt Bomer was perfect 4 Christian
And so White Collar star Matt Bomer was trending right after the casting announcement, though he's done absolutely zero campaigning for the part. (A popular, fan-made Fifty Shades of Grey trailer starring Bomer could be to blame.)
Bomer fans have been sharing their displeasure with hashtags like #ChangeHunnamToBomer, #NoBomerNoMovie and #MattBomerIsOurGrey.
But if Bomer isn't available for the role, many readers are OK with Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder as the lead.
@ShelbyDanielle0: @iansomerhalder should have been Christian Grey! I mean those eyes...he's a perfect fit for the description too!
@mabof50: I really wanted #iansomerhalder and #milakunis
Though Bomer and Somerholder haven't commented, other actors joked about the casting announcement on Twitter:
The Office's Rann Wilson: Congrats to Charlie Hunnam on the 50 Shades of Grey role. It was a tough fight but the actor with the longer hair won. #bummed
New Girl's Max Greenfield: My participation in the 50 Shades film was contingent on Roz from Frasier being cast as Anastasia. Sad this didn't work out. #Showbiz
Jobs star (and USA TODAY columnist) Josh Gad: Really happy for Charlie Hunnam getting 50 Shades lead, but bummed because I came thisclose. Now I have to return all that used leather.
