Consumers may see less expensive iPhones in their future.

The Wall Street Journal reports Apple is working on a version of its popular smartphone that's cheaper, citing "people briefed on the matter." The device could debut as soon as this year.

According to the report, the company is weighing a switch from the standard aluminum body of the device to a lower cost polycarbonate plastic. Apple declined comment on the report.

Apple's iPhone 5, which launched last fall, currently starts at $199. However, the two-year old iPhone 4S sells for $99, while the iPhone 4 is free, provided they sign on to a two-year contract with a wireless carrier.

Then again, Apple doesn't seem to have an issue selling iPhones. The company reported selling nearly 27 million during the fourth quarter.
