Police Chase Ends in Fatal Crash

By Victor Blackwell First Coast News JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a high-speed chase that ended with the death of a suspect. According to investigators, the chase started around 2:15 a.m. Friday when a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer noticed a pick-up truck was driving erratically near Interstate 295 and Normandy Boulevard. The officer attempted to stop the driver, but FHP says the driver sped away. The chase ended in a crash near the intersection of Beaver Street and Cahoon Road. FHP says the officer deployed stop sticks to deflate the driver’s tires. The driver lost control and crashed into a utility pole in the 100 block of Cahoon Street. Investigators say the driver died at the scene. No one else was injured. Florida Highway Patrol tells First Coast News, the driver is a 24-year-old man from the First Coast. Investigators have identified the driver as 24 year old Joe R. ellis of Jacksonville. Investigators say his driver's license was suspended. The crash knocked out power to several homes in the area. Crews have restored power to homes in the area.
