JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Sarah Ray teaches fourth grade at Callahan Intermediate School.

Ray says she tries to keep her students engaged in learning by making everything that they do as hands-on as possible. She also tries to relate the lessons to current events, both local and national.

One example, to help the students understand the presidential election and election process, the class had an election of their own.

"Skittles and Starburst, and those are the chewies, versus chocolate," explains student, Cheyenne Crosby. "Starburst and Twix won, so now we're just competing those two. I'm on the chewy side, so we're making posters and speeches about them to try and get people to vote for them," she explains.

"They're actually learning about the election process and all of the terminology that they hear on the news," says Ray. "They're actually learning what all those words mean and applying it in a simpler election."

Sarah Ray has been in the education field for nine years.
