ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- A Duval County elementary teacher is facing suspension after a controversial coloring assignment.

A coloring assignment was passed out to second grade students at Atlantic Beach Elementary School in February as part of a black history lesson that includes minstrel characters and a cartoon lynching with a group of people watching.

A concerned parent brought the controversial packet up to the principal, which was then forwarded to Superintendent Nikolai Vitti.

The investigation ended a week ago and Vitti has decided on disciplinary action. He is recommending a letter of reprimand and five-day suspension without pay.

"A lapse of judgement on the individual part of the teacher to know and recognize not only was this not grade level appropriate, not only was it not rigorous for second grade but the content should not have been used in isolation and in a vacuum," Vitti said.

The teacher, Ms. Flores, will have 10 days from Monday to file an appeal. Vitti has also asked edhelper.com to remove the lesson plan. The suspension will not take place until the board votes on April 2.
