NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. -- Hayley Snyder thought she was coming to school early Wednesday for a guidance counselor appointment.

But First Coast News' big check and camera probably gave away the fact that wasn't the case.

Hayley's mom submitted her daughter's nomination for good grades and community service.

"There's always something going on and she's juggling it and she's keeping her grades up," she said.

In 2001, Hayley lost a brother with special needs. So now she volunteers at school and in the community to help others like him.

"Like right now, I am taking sign language so maybe I can help deaf kids or like work with special needs kids or just anyone."

Her dream is to go to school in Miami, but the financial burden has been a concern.

"I've been worried about colleges and like what my parents could afford and what we could afford," she said.

Now with a thousand dollar check in hand, the Snyders say they feel better prepared to help their little girl fulfill her dream.

"It's definitely going to help. It definitely is going to be a step in the right direction."

"I feel like my hard work has been paid off."

FCN has 10 more scholarships to give away. The next nine will be for $1,000 as well. But the final one, the last one, will be for $5,000.
