JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Thousands of children on the First Coast could be starting the school year without all the supplies they need. And, for their parents this is very stressful.

"My husband is medically retired from the army, so we are living off a very limited income. So back to school supplies and clothes were not going to happen," says Melissa Givins.

Melissa is a mother of six. And, four of her children are still in grade school. They moved here two months ago and have had some tough financial times. So, they are now being helped by the Salvation Army.

"We had some minor major mishaps along the way and the Salvation Army has been gracious to help us along the way during this period," explains Melissa.

So, when she heard about the Salvation Army's Stuff the Bus program with United Way of NE Florida, Publix and First Coast News she was so excited.

"I just want the best for my kids. For them to be comfortable going into school to start the new year gives us that hand we need," says Melissa.

Stuff the Bus provides school supplies for children whose parents can't afford them. And, here's how you can help. Just drop off school supplies at your local Publix in Florida.

You can also make a monetary donation this year by buying a "Tools for Back to School" donation card at any Florida Publix and at a Publix store in our Georgia viewing area. The campaign wraps up the weekend of August 3rd.
