ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Inside classroom 655 at Bartram Trail High School, Haley Jasper teaches her students about anatomy, physiology and biology. Julia Driscoll took her class last year and is now a UNF student. While walking across campus last week, she saw a girl on the ground having a seizure.

"I knew right away to turn her on her side, take her backpack off and put something under her head so she didn't hit anything," Julia said.

She knew to do that because it was something Mrs. Jasper had taught her students the previous year. Julia and Mrs. Jasper joke that sometimes she can go off on tangents during a lesson, but that is when students often absorb the most knowledge. Also, that is when Mrs. Jasper taught her students last year how to help someone who is having a seizure.

"I think in those moments, that is where the teachable moments become more real and important than the curricular moments in the classroom," tells Mrs. Jasper.

The girl at UNF who Julia helped was OK and checked out by EMS, but Julia wanted to make sure Mrs. Jasper knew her lesson that day made a difference.

"Thank God because it helped someone out!" says Julia with a smile.

Mrs. Jasper said it is always nice to hear from her former students, but this story touched her heart as a teacher!

"For me it was like 'oh wow!' That was more meaningful of a moment because she felt comfortable with what to do in that situation," said Mrs. Jasper.
