JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Timmy Conroy dreams of being a movie director some day, and he might be on his way, after receiving international recognition for his video production work.
A sixth grade student at Coppergate Elementary, Timmy has taken home state and regional first-place awards, as well as an international award for his age group. "I just really like making videos," he says.
Timmy isn't required to know video production, but he chose to work with Coppergate media specialist, Kim Miskowski, to learn. And Miskowski says that isn't out of character.
"He is a child who has tremendous enthusiasm for everything he does. He likes sports. He likes school. He gets along with kids at school, he gets along with adults. He goes to church all the time. He volunteers with this family in the community, he's got a great balance in his life," Miskowski says.
Timmy says he chooses topics that are close to his heart."I recently did a public service video for the blood alliance and I really wanted to do that because my grandpa was the first 100-gallon donor and a lot of people in my family had cancer and need blood platelettes."
And he says one of his favorite parts about his work is seeing the impact it has on others. "One of the people I know said that once her husband saw the video, he went and donated because of the video," he says.
Timmy also works on his school's news team. He'll find out in November whether he placed in this year's state competition to go on to compete internationally.
