Teacher of the Week Eddie Knight
Twin Lakes Academy Elementary
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- He went from serving our country to serving our community. A 3rd grade teacher at Twins Lakes Academy Elementary is our 'Teacher of the Week."
Eddie Knight is a co-teacher in a larger then normal 3rd grade class. He's been teaching for 5-years. The first 4 years were in 1st grade. He always knew this is what he wanted to do. "My plan was to finish high school. Join the Army. Get my GI Bill. Come back and teach."
His plans were on track at first. After high school he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas; but then everything changed. He was in an on-duty motorcycle accident that nearly took his life.
"Doctors gave me a 10% chance to live. I fought tremendous odds to get here."
After 6-months in hospitals he received a medical honorable discharge. Went to college and now he's teaching.
Twin Lakes Academy Principal Denise Robertson said, "He really is a true teacher at heart. He loves children. He enjoys doing what he is doing. He's very knowledgeable. He's ready to learn anything he needs to increase his knowledge in the classroom."
Students, like 3rd grader Christopher Eavlos think he's the best. "He makes us laugh and whenever I have trouble with something he helps us with it."
Considering all he's been through, everyone feels lucky he's here teaching. "It's really an honor to be at this school," said Knight.
Knight believes his time in the Army has helped him become a better teacher.
