JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- A first grade teacher at San Pablo Elementary is our Teacher of the Week. The parent who nominated Michelle Dunavant said she is so wonderful she would like for her son to have her as a teacher through high school.
Dunavant is helps her first grade students learn to about reading non-fiction books, and encourages them to read. "Here's one about insects. Go ahead and start looking at non-fiction books."
Her young students are all very interested in their books about snakes, bugs and birds.
"Non-fiction is something we're working on now. Non-fiction is more technical for young readers," said Dunavant.
Joe Gillen's mom nominated Dunavant for Teacher of the Week, and wrote in her letter, 'She cares about her students as well as their parents. My son absolutely adores her and I as well.'
Dunavant has been teaching for 10 years. The past four at San Pablo Elementary.
She said she loves teaching first graders because they are emerging readers.
"This is the time of year it gets really fun because they've turned the corner and they're able to read so much more and they're taking off and it's a joy to be part of that and see it happen."
