JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A teacher at Ruth Upson Elementary makes 1st grade special and unforgettable. She's our Teacher of the Week.
In Cynthia Austad's 1st grade class, students are learning about living and non-living things and Ms. Austad really knows how to make it fun and interesting.
"We raised butterflies and released them. We're raising tadpoles and talking about life cycles of plants and animals. With this age I think hands-on makes it more fun for them."
Austad is very creative. Her class has made ice cream, peanut butter, and applesauce this year. Now, the students are growing their own plants and learning all about the different parts of a plant.
1st grader Hannah Stomps' mom nominated Austad for Teacher of the Week. In her nomination letter, she said her daughter has fallen more in love with school because of being in Mrs. Austad's class.
Hannah adds, "My teacher, she's the best teacher I've ever had she's just wonderful. Everything she does is just wonderful. She's very creative. "
Austad has been teaching for 12 years. She can't imagine doing anything else.
"To be honest, it's the most fun job I've ever had. I think my kids have a great time. My goal is if they go home and said they had a great time at school, I've done a good job in making my plans effective for them."
Austad's 1st grade class is not only learning how to read books they are making their own books using their own words and pictures.
