JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 4th grade teacher at Hendricks Avenue Elementary is Duval County's Elementary Mathematics Educator of the Year and she's our Teacher of the Week.
Not every student begins the school year liking math; but if they get the chance to take math from Melissa Buchanan, by the end of the year they will learn to love it.
Mrs. Buchanan has a knack for teaching mathematics. It's a subject she loves. "I love teaching math. It's probably one of my favorite subjects, along with science and social studies."
Since this is a new school year, we caught up with a few students from Buchanan's class last year. Erin Elkins is now a 5th grader and started the school year last year not liking math. "I was thinking, 'Oh no, math is so boring,' and then I came to this class and she made it so fun and easy for me and I learned a lot from her. I don't think math is boring anymore. I love math."
"How do you not make math fun?" asked Buchanan.
She is Duval County's Mathematics Educator of the Year, which is given to the most outstanding elementary math teacher. "Definitely the satisifaction of knowing you won this award. This is an award the Duval County Elementary Mathematics Council created to really promote mathematics education. In Duval County, there are so many wonderful teachers and we work better when we collaborate together."
The real winners, of course, are her students, who learn to love math and how to solve problems on their own. "She was a great teacher," said Elkins.
Buchanan has been teaching for 9 years. She said she does it because this is who she is and this is what she loves.
