JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- San Mateo Elementary is one of 8 diabetic centers in Duval County and our Teacher of the Week is the school's full-time nurse.
Nurse Stephanie Bowman spends her day with kids. She helps them prick their fingers, check their blood sugar, and count their carbs. She also gives insulin injections and anything else needed to keep students healthy at school; but she's probably best known for her hugs.
First-grader Arrien makes sure he gets a hug every time he sees Bowman and she loves giving them.
"When I go home I think about them all the time because I'm home and I don't have to count my carbs or prick my finger and check my blood sugar, but this continues for them 24 hours a day 365 days a year and I think about them," said Bowman.
She has eight diabetic students at this school and she checks each child three to six times a day.
"She educates them on how to count their carbs and how to have a normal meal. She goes above and beyond," said Standards Coach Karen Gardiner, who nominated Bowman for Teacher of the Week.
This is Bowman's second year at San Mateo Elementary. She worked in a hospital before coming here, but now says, this is where she belongs. "This is home. This feels like home to me."
