PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- She was last year's Rookie Teacher of the Year at Landrum Middle School and this week Carrie St. Clair is our Teacher of the Week.
St. Clair is in her 4th year of teaching 6th grade Language Arts. It's a subject she loves because she's always enjoyed reading and writing herself. She also loves bringing her students to the school library to pick out books she thinks they would enjoy reading.
"It's so fun to take them to the next level. I'm always pushing and challenging them. I'm teaching Edgar Allan Poe and Jack London. Text that some students might not get until high school," said St. Clair.
6th grade student Cole Rieger never thought he would read as much as he does now and never thought he would enjoy reading so much. He credits his teacher Ms. St. Clair for helping him find the right books. He nominated her for Teacher of the Week. "I felt like she deserved it. She's a really nice teacher. She comes in with a smile every day and greets you at the door. It brightens up your day," said Rieger.
For homework, St. Clair gives 100 pages of reading every week, but says very few students only read 100 pages. Her students are anxious to learn and read and she says they brighten up her day just as much as she brightens theirs.
"Every day no matter what I'm going through in my life these kids make me laugh. They make me feel good about who I am and what i'm doing."
St. Clair says she loves teaching 6th grade. She says it's a great age group and she loves teaching. She feels this is her dream job.
