JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The band director at Fort Caroline Middle School is helping students learn to do something they never thought they could do. Karen Wilhelm is teaching them to play instruments and she's our Teacher of the Week.
Karen Wilhelm's symphonic band class has all 7th and 8th graders who have already taken beginning band, where they learned their instruments. "It's a lot of fun because Ms. Wilhelm makes it more fun because we play a lot of interesting music," said 8th grader Braylynn Turley.
A parent nominated Wilhelm for Teacher of the Week because she said Wilhelm can teach any student how to play an instrument.
8th grader Jorick Banks plays the tuba and never thought this was something he could do until he met Ms. Wilhelm. "I wasn't really interested until I heard the band play and then I decided to get into it because it sounded nice."
Now he plans to continue playing into high school and even college.
"This is fun for them. This is not a chore. It's something they take pride in and work hard for," said Wilhelm.
She teaches band and chorus because she learned to love music when she was in school and wants the same for these students. "Both middle and high school wouldn't have been the same without it and I wanted to give that experience to other students in this county."
Wilhelm has been teaching band for 7 years.
