ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A second grade teacher at Otis Mason Elementary in St. Augustine is instilling the love of math in his students. He is our Teacher of the Week.
John Ackerman is constantly moving around in his second grade classroom. His students said he almost always has a big smile on his face. "Yes, he's always happy," said student Michael Weber. "Unless we're loud," added student Kyle Bazler.
Ackerman has been teaching for nearly 20 years and said this is the age he really enjoys. He especially loves teaching math. "They do a lot of hands-on activity using pattern blocks and cubes. Just by playing games they get a better understanding of the math concepts, which leads to better understanding of being able to do math skills."
Students are on the computer to take part in a math competition with others students from around the world, and the smart board helps students with math games.
He does all this so his students will excel in math in the upper grades, but he also really enjoys being a teacher. "I just have a love and appreciation for kids. It's one of those things you're born into and I feel it was my calling," said Ackerman.
His students recently took part in the World Math Day Competition and finished in the top 50 among 218 countries from around the world.
