ST. MARYS, GA -- Growing up, she didn't have P.E. in elementary school, so she made it her mission to teach physical education to as many young students as possible. After 33 years, Coach Vicki Maxwell is retiring. She's our Teacher of the Week.

Field day at St. Mary's Elementary is where Vicki Maxwell loves to teach. She's out on the field, coaching P.E. to dozens of young students. "I think you learn in P.E. how to cooperate with others, and how never to give up on a task, and always try your best."

During her three decades as a P.E. teacher, she has inspired countless students to exercise, work hard, and have fun. "If every kid leaves the gym sweating with a smile on their face, I've done my job."

Principal Tom McClendon said she's done more than just her job; she's made a tremendous impact on thousands and thousands of children who have gone through elementary school in Camden County. "She's had an impact on so many lives through the years and we really don't know what we're going to do without her."

Coach Maxwell has taught for 33 years. She started coaching and teaching on the high school level, but it was at the elementary school where she found her passion to give students a foundation that will last a lifetime. "I love it. I want every kid to have P.E. and I hope budget cuts never take it away."

Maxwell is this year's Teacher of the Year at the school, and after years of teaching she is retiring at the end of this school year.
