ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- If you watch the Lakeside Junior High School student band perform, you'd never believe some of them didn't know a thing about music before meeting band teacher Scott Boyer.
"We teach them everything; from opening the [instrument] case, taking out the instrument, how to hold it," Boyer explains.
"Before you know it, they're rock stars!"
Boyer is our Teacher of the Week (April 11, 2012) because he inspires this musical magic with plenty of humor, which his students appreciate. Just ask eighth-grader Aubrey Mount.
"We all want to hear what Mr. Boyer says because it's usually hilarious," Mount reveals.
"He cares about the students," Mount goes on to say. "He's like our mentor. He's not just our teacher. He's our friend."
Boyer says he's learned how to connect well with kids.
"You gotta keep things moving," he states with a smile.
"Kids watch a lot of TV today. You've got to keep the pace fast; keep them interested. The music definitely does that."
