JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Robert Bruns has more than twenty years of teaching experience and has spent the last decade at Bartram Trail High School. He teaches Advanced Placement World History and Art History -- subjects that aren't always well-received by students.

"I bring a little bit of humor," Bruns said. "I try to find the funny things about history so they can understand it a little bit differently."

It's a tactic, his students say, is working. "On the AP test I did get a five out of five and I was pretty excited about that," said student, Katie Brittain. "And I'm pretty sure that had to do with him and his teaching."

Bruns said he knows he can't get every student to love history, but he said it's his job to try and make it exciting. "For the most part it's the energy that I bring in, that I try to transfer to every student," he said.

"He tries to connect with everybody in some way," Brittain said. "So in a classroom element, he looks to each and every student and is like, 'Ok, guys do you get this? Can we move on?'"

Bruns said he's not just teaching about the past, he's coaching for the future.

"When they graduate, and go to college, the skills I hope I've taught them, they'll use in college and they'll use in life, and that's the valuable thing about teaching."
