FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The contractor rebuilding Interstate 595 in Broward County is also giving the east-west roadway a $10 million landscaping facelift.

The South Florida SunSentinel reports the first trees have already been planted along the ramps leading from the interstate to Florida's Turnpike and along several other stretches west of Fort Lauderdale.

The newspaper reports the plan calls for 27 varieties of trees and 10 kinds of shrubs. They're all drought-tolerant and capable of thriving along the roadway.

Florida Department of Transportation landscape architect Elisabeth Hassett says the plants serve another purpose. They help shield nearby homes from the noise, stabilize slopes and prevent erosion.

The project has three themes. The western edge reflects the Everglades, the middle section transitions into an "upland area" and the eastern edge features the ocean.
