LARGO, Fla. -- The Florida Department of Corrections has sent 12 inmates who were living at a Goodwill-operated work release facility in Largo back to prison.

The action followed a surprise security audit conducted Monday at the Largo Residential Re-Entry Center.

DOC spokeswoman Ann Howard told the Tampa Bay Times the men are suspected of violating rules. She did not describe the violations in detail because the agency is still preparing the report.

The inmates were sent to Polk Correctional Institution.

State Sen. Jack Latvala called for the review last week after a series of stories in the Times raised questions about security issues. Earlier, Latavala and state Rep. Ed Hooper met with residents of a nearby mobile home community to address their concerns.
