TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- State lawmakers are debating a bill that would give in-state tuition prices to children of illegal immigrants in Florida.

On Tuesday, a House committee passed the bill sponsored by Rep. Jeanette Nunez and sent it to its next committee stop.

Currently, children of undocumented immigrants are required to pay out-of-state tuition rates at Florida colleges and universities.

Nunez said the proposed bill would offer those children in-state tuition, as long as they were born in the U.S.

"This really is just one step in the right direction in providing relief for many individuals who have been unable to attend an institution of higher learning because of the burden of the out-of-state tuition."

The bill follows a federal judge's ruling last year that said the state cannot charge tuition rates for U.S. citizens based on their parents' immigration status.
