TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville woman was sentenced to six years in state prison for submitting over $400,000 in false claims to the Florida Medicaid Program, according to the State Attorney's Office.

Edna Lorraine Watkins, owner of Homecare Unlimited LLC, entered guilty pleas to Medicaid Provider Fraud and Grand Theft, both of these charges are first degree felonies. She is also obligated to repay the state $402,424 in restitution.

"Today's strong sentencing of prison time and restitution should send a clear message that people who defraud the Medicaid program will be held accountable," said Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit acted on a referral from the Agency for Health Care Administration and investigated Watkins for billing Medicaid for services that were never provided to patients who weren't eligible to receive them.

"Medicaid fraud is a growing problem in the Jacksonville area," according to State Attorney Angela Corey.
