PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. (WESH) -- A Port Canaveral police sergeant has been fired after bringing targets resembling Trayvon Martin to a police firearms training session.

Port Canaveral terminated Sgt. Ron King after investigating the incident. Port Canaveral Spokeswoman Rosalind Harvey said King brought the targets to a gun range where officers were training about two weeks ago. Someone reported the incident to Port authorities, who suspended and then fired King.

Harvey called the use of the target unprofessional and insensitive.

King had worked for Port Canaveral police since January 2011.

Attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents Martin's family, issued a statement indicating the family's view of the situation.

"It is absolutely reprehensible that a high-ranking member of the Port Canaveral police, sworn to protect and serve Floridians, would use the image of a dead child as target practice," the statement said. "Such a deliberate and depraved indifference to this grieving family is unacceptable."
