NEW YORK (AP) - A car designer is building a prototype of an electric "horseless carriage" that animal advocates hope will replace New York City's horse-drawn carriages.

The Daily News says Jason Wenig of the Creative Workshop is basing his design after a 1909 Pierce-Arrow and Packard.

He says his Dania Beach, Fla. workshop was contracted by New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets to build the car. It seats eight people and will cost about $450,000 to make.

The group says it wants to get the horseless carriage on the streets of New York City as part of a pilot program. It hopes it could eventually replace horse-drawn carriages.

City Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito is in favor of the pilot project but it doesn't have the support of Council Speaker Christine Quinn
